International Symposium
"Symposium
on the sustainable international framework
on climate change beyond 2012"
Kyoto Protocol is now ready to enter into force as Russia
prepares for ratification, while detailed rules are continuously
developed in preparation for its implementation. However, the
Kyoto Protocol is merely a framework requiring the developed
countries' commitment until 2012, and the discussions on a
framework beyond 2012 will resume by the end of year 2005.
The climate change issue is truly an important global issue
that must be addressed on a long-term basis. To respond to
climate change issue, we must build an effective and sustainable
framework that encompasses the United States, which is the
world's largest greenhouse gas emitter, and developing countries,
which is expected to have significant emissions increase in
the future.
The symposium will be opened by a keynote lecture to introduce
the result of discussions at the Industrial Structure Council
of The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Then the developed
and developing countries' experts will provide lectures and
panel discussion, through which we expect to identify what
viewpoints will be vital for building a sustainable international
framework on climate change for the future, and what actions
will be needed to implement such a framework.
We expect your active participation in this symposium.
